Pernah ga kita nonton filem di bioskop karena denger2 reviewnya bagus atau masuk box office...
Atau baca novel karena masuk list bestseller...
Makan di restoran yg di-fitur di majalah...
Berapa kali kita kecewa karena itu? Do other people's opinions matter?
Sebelum beli boardgame biasanya kita2 pada cek di good ol' BGG ranking. Berapa org disini bingung knapa Puerto Rico masih #1 setelah sekian lama?
This is just my opinion on choosing games utilizing the BGG ranking. Ada beberapa hal yg harus di note:
-Banyak orang yg vote di BGG suka ngasih automatic 0 or automatic 10
-Cuman ikutan karena nge-trend
-Setinggi apapun ranking-nya, bukan berarti semua suka/bother to even vote
Jadi gimana donk? Masa ga percaya sama BGG?
Boleh percaya, asal datanya diusut dan ditilik dulu.
Kalo gua sih biasanya:
1. Using categories tab, you can check the rankings of games exclusively in that category!
2. You can see how many people voted on that game. What I usually do, instead of looking at the score per-se, I look at the number of votes. 300 people voting all 10 on a game may not be as reliable as 13000 people voting an average of 7 on a game. More votes mean a wider audience! But still, look at the audience for the category. Don't compare Puerto Rico and War of the Ring and choose the one with the most votes! I would say if you have over 3000 people bothering to vote for a war game... I'll say take it.
3. Look at the publishing date. If El Grande can stay on top 10 after 13 years... then it's hard to say that it's a bad game. On the other end of the spectrum, Caylus has gotten the most awards, is still on top 10, and just got into the market for 3 years. So it's just a really thin line dividing a classic and a classic-to-be.
4. Read carefully the reviews of those who have the game. Even better, read the reviews of those BGGers whose reviews get the most hype (the Hot! link on reviews box is useful for this) and read them carefully, along with the replies they might get from other geeks. Reading the rulebooks if available also helps
Then again, rankings are just that... other people's reviews! So in the end it's what you and your gaming group enjoy! And that's my two cents...
Trivia: According to BGG, the worst game ever is Tic-Tac-Toe...
