Axis & Allies : Gudalcanal
I post in this forum so non wargamer can also have a little bit sense of killing ( See my Battle of the bulge report in Wargames Fans forum)
Background history, This was the Allies offensive to retake Solomon Islands(eastern part of Papua New Guinea) after captured by the Japanese Imperial Navy in WW II. Indeed Japanese captured these Islands to protect the flank of the Japanese offensive in New Guinea, securing barrier in Rabaul and to interdict (isolate Australia) supply lines between Americans and ANZ, also to secure their oil operation in rich Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). Guadalcanal island is part of Solomon Islands.
Players
- Bro Dee : Axis Player , The Japanese Imperial Navy
- Bram (gue ngga tau disini namanya apa) : Allies Player, - turn 3.5 – 5 , coached by RobinHood_01
Objective
The first player to gain VPs up to (more than ) 15 by means destroying opponent’s Battleships or Aircraft Carriers and defending the Airfields. Giving each player one Airfield at the start of the game
Turn 1, Initiative : Axis
Cleverly, no attacks has been made by the Japanese in Turn 1, all Axis could do was to try to carry as much as possible The Japs infantry units into further Islands towards Allies defense Islands in Guadalcanal. Two Aircraft carriers, Cruiser, Battleship, Destroyer sailed to adjacent sea zone A & B. Troops in Santa Isabel geared up to Transport from sea zone G, as well as Infantry and Artillery in Choiseul , Bougenville and New Georgia went towards east, with one destination, to retake Henderson field in Guadalcanal and secure Japanese’s perimeter in western Islands.
Unfortunately, Allies player did not try to prevent Japanese advancing fleet by disturbing or forcing their fleets into sea zone H from sea zone J and K, instead Allies only moved 1 Battleship, 1 submarine and 1 destroyer ( not enough plan to sink Japanese’s Cruiser and Transport in the next turn 2) . Plus, moving 2 Destroyers to empty sea zone I space.
Axis succeeded to build one airfield in New Georgia and so for the Allies, one airfield in Guadalcanal was built
Axis : 2 VPs from 2 airfields
Allies : 2 VPs from 2 airfields
Turn 2, Initiative : Allies
After the surprise submarine attack in sea zone H which gave Allies player nothing , Jap’s infantry and artillery landed on Guadalcanal to empower 3 Jap units that was going to be slaughtered in this turn. On the other hand, Allies units landed both on Malaita and Guadalcanal.
After being stormed by Allies fleets in sea zone H, miraculously , Jap’s Transport , cruiser and destroyer still intact in pieces in that sea zone. Battle in Guadalcanal now began, only one Jap’s unit of infantry died, and one Americans’ airfield that was just built in turn 1 has been damaged.
In Malaita, with lack of support , Japs infantry vanished in the blink of an eye!! Now Americans controlled this Island
I do not know what was going on with Allies Player, he did not send his fighters from Aircraft carriers in Sea zone K, no support from 5 bombers and 5 fighters in Allies’ home base in New Caledonia, what a blunder!!!. If He did , Japanese infantry and artillery units in Guadalcanal could be taking more casualties
Two Americans’ Destroyers sailed into sea zone F, ready to take on 1 cruiser, 1 destroyer and 1 submarine., hhmmmm but Allies player cancelled his thoughts by not initiating combat in that sea zone
Axis : 2 VPs from 2 airfields
Total 4 VPs ( 2 + 2 )
Allies : 1 VPs from 1 airfield
Total 3 VPs ( 2 + 1 )
Turn 3, Initiative : Axis
More transport and cruiser arrived in sea zone H, again Allies player was brought into battle in sea zone H, a lot of ships sent there to annihilate Japanese fleets including five fighters. Now, the first dogfight has begun…, leaving only one fighter at both sides, it seems like , the tactics for Japan has worked. Small battle in sea zone D and Allies’ destroyers in sea zone F sinked by 1 bomber, fighters, batlleship and cruiser, even after using ‘PT Boat token’ as a bait for casualties.
In Gudalcanal, after Axis player used ‘Quick drop token’ into Guadalcanal from sea zone H, fierce battle engaged valiantly, Allies has sent their bombers to Gudalcanal to support the ground units, which still suffered by Japanese attacks who still tried to blew up Henderson Airfield. Results : still one Japanese unit survived the battle and Henderson field was damaged.
Santa Isabel captured by Allies force. No Japanese unit there since all remaining units has sailed to Malaita to disturb Allies concentration while Axis player moved all his units safely to strengthen and bring more supplies to Choiseul, Santa Isabel and New Georgia.
Again, blunder made by Allies player, not enough supply brought to Malaita and Gudalcanal, so he neither can build a new airfield in Malaita nor repair one airfield in Gudalcanal.
One Japanese infantry unit and artillery arrived in Santa Isabel, ready to retake the island.
Axis : 2 VPs from 2 airfields
Total 6 VPs ( 4 + 2 )
Allies : No VP
Total 3 VPs ( 3 + 0 )
Turn 4 Initiative : Allies
Now, three Japanese Aircraft carriers has begun to give more contribution to Axis player victory, one in sea zone E, one in F and one in B. What does it mean? It means you are using the aircraft carriers as “bridge” for you fighters (because fighter can only move two spaces). Supplies arrived in Bouganville.
Axis player sent the last infantry to sea zone H which leaves New Georgia empty.
It seemed that Allies player try to be more aggressive, knowing that he would need more airfields to claim more victory points. He sent two fighters and one bomber to New Georgia, and three fighters to support his ground troops in Santa Isabel. The rest of bombers flying in Guadalcanal.
The battle in sea zone H opened by American submarine torpedo attack, sunk the last Japanese transport to Guadalcanal. To prevent annihilation of ground troops in Santa Isabel, Axis player sent three fighters and bombers by using “Superior fighters token” to fly one fighter from Aircraft carrier as back up in sea zone F. Only one fighter was shot down by the Allies and succeeds to prevent annihilation.
Battle for New Georgia ended up with Allies player has no more ground units.
More airfield built in Bouganville for Japs. As for the Americans, all two airfields in Guadalcanal has been fixed. Supplies from Japanese transport landed in Choiseul
Axis : 3 VPs from 3 airfields
Total 9 VPs ( 6 + 3 )
Allies : 3 VPs from 3 airfields
Total 6 VPs ( 3 + 3 )
Turn 5 Initiative : Axis
So much things to do for Allies player to catch up. All units moving west while Axis player tied to secure his perimeter by defending three islands only ( no need to be aggressive), and ordered all units to pull back. Air and Sea battle only happened in sea zone G.
The last attempt to take back New Georgia was not succeed. Although now Japs ground units gone in Santa Isabel not enough supply to build airfield. In the opposite sides, Japs built one more Airfield in Choiseul.
Axis : 4 VPs from 4 airfields
Total 13 VPs (9 + 4 )
Allies : 3 VPs from 3 airfields
Total 9 VPs ( 6 + 3 )
Looking at above points, since no more chances for Allies player to win , we stopped the game.
Player’s note :
- The game pretty much balance but still the creator of the game wants to give advantage to Axis player at the beginning by giving Axis 5 Islands in advance. This is a typical Axis and Allies game
- For the Allies, they have change to build airfield as soon as possible, because all those three airfields just right in Allies’ corner, pretty much easy to defend it.
- Patience is all Allies player need. Look at the map! Allies player has more powerful armada, safer airfield locations, and easy to attack directly to Axis’ heart in Bougenville by just paying three supply tokens to arrive in sea zone E and land to Bougenville.
- I’ve played it twice as Axis , and the most space to distract Allies player is by moving my fleets to sea zone H and G, after that my opponent will forget their Allies advantages, but since I never tried to play as Allies it would be really interesting to try it to turn the tide.
